The group that departed the City of the Blessed the following morning was small, only a couple dozen in number. Everwynne and several of her guards joined them. The Wood Elves had helped Ciaran take Rosehaven back when Belenus held the city in thrall, and it was hoped that Lord Nathrien could be convinced to lend his warriors once again. Secret roads to Willowden would make it possible for Everwynne to break off from their group and meet with her father on the way to the Royal city.

Ciaran, Tomas, Aislynn, Rorin, Lyzandar and a small contingency of soldiers were selected to strike out. Tomas was meticulous in choosing the fighters best suited to protecting their King under such difficult circumstances. The smaller party was a source of concern for the Master at Arms, but he understood the situation. An attempt to take back Rosehaven depended on secrecy and their ability to move through the countryside without drawing unwanted attention. Ciaran hadn’t laid eyes on Rosehaven since the night it was lost to Vesspial and Elize. His skin crawled at the thought of what it would look like now.

Queen Lylliane and her army remained in the City of the Blessed. If Everwynne could not convince her father to join their cause, they would need a well-rested and prepared army when they finally confronted Elize. Since her failed siege, there had been few sightings, but wherever she chose to lick her wounds, she was not in Rosehaven. The city was watched closely. If Elize had returned there, word would have reached Ciaran.

By midmorning they were well on their way to the beleaguered Royal city. The world was a sparkling blanket of white, scarred by patches of fouled earth where Elize and her minions wrought destruction. Homesteads were torn apart, forests were reduced to ash and scorched ground wherever the creatures of the netherworld entered the land of the living. Any hesitation that remained in the minds of their company was wiped away with every razed farm they passed. It was apparent that Elize held all of Venallis as responsible for her pain as the Soulbound and the wizards she sought to destroy.

Aislynn joined Ciaran before midday. She steered her horse close to his and passed him her waterskin. “I wanted to tell you how sorry I am about Sir Landry’s betrayal.”

“I was angry at first, but I understand why he did it,” Ciaran answered with a small shake of the head. “His daughter, Iriana, was a good friend. I hate to think of her soul being harmed by Elize.”

“I suppose he was only doing what any parent would for the love of their child,” Aislynn agreed.

Ciaran frowned. He was being honest when he told Aislynn he no longer felt anger. What he felt was pain. First his uncle had betrayed him, and now a trusted advisor was discovered as a spy. With everything else going mad around him, that was almost too much to wrap his mind around.

“What will you do with him?” Aislynn asked.
